A 29-year-old man faces multiple charges after allegedly stealing a military-style vehicle and leading Utica police on a destructive chase that left two officers injured and caused widespread property damage across the upstate New York city.
Chaotic Chase Through Utica Streets
Daniel Passino-Brazeau allegedly stole the military-style vehicle before leading law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit through Utica’s streets. The chase carved a path of destruction along Genesee Street and through the 1600 block of Oneida, where witnesses reported seeing the vehicle strike multiple objects including trees. Police officers attempted to stop the vehicle numerous times during the pursuit, which endangered pedestrians and caused significant property damage throughout the residential and commercial areas.
The chase came to an end when officers successfully apprehended Passino-Brazeau, but not before two law enforcement officers sustained injuries during the incident. Authorities have not released specific details about the nature or severity of the officers’ injuries, though both required medical attention. The suspect was taken into custody near Dakin Wynn Hospital, where a security officer also became involved in the apprehension.
DWI Charges Filed Against Suspect
Following his arrest, Passino-Brazeau was charged with driving while intoxicated along with additional charges related to the vehicle theft and the dangerous pursuit. The Utica Police Department confirmed the 29-year-old remained in custody as investigators worked to determine how he obtained access to the military-style vehicle and what motivated the theft. Authorities have not disclosed whether the vehicle belonged to a military installation, a private collector, or another entity.
Community Impact and Response
The incident raised serious concerns about public safety in Utica, particularly regarding how such a specialized vehicle could be stolen and driven through populated areas. Local residents expressed relief that no civilians were killed during the chase, though several reported near-misses with the speeding military vehicle. The total cost of property damage remains under assessment as investigators catalog the full extent of destruction along the pursuit route. Police continue their investigation into all circumstances surrounding the theft and chase.
